Zaza is an abstract portrait with a deep blue background. The colors in her headwrap and jewelry create strong, complementary contrast and energy. The blue represents the ocean, a symbol of the physical distance between me and my grandmother who lives in Cabo Verde, an archipelago off the west coast of Africa. I named this piece after her. Zaza is about strength, grace and a quiet kind of beauty. Even from far away, she feels close. This painting is a tribute to the love I carry for her.
